This article will guide you through the best beaches, top-notch accommodations, and essential travel tips to make your trip unforgettable. Whether you’re an avid adventurer or simply seeking relaxation, you’ll discover everything you need to know about Isla Grande Brazil.

What is Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande, an emerald gem just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, offers a refreshing escape from the city’s frenetic pace. Its lush landscape is decorated with dense forests, wildlife, and breathtaking views, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Unlike the bustling beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the island’s shores, such as Lopes Mendes and Aventureiro, beckon with their pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, providing an idyllic backdrop for relaxation and exploration.

When to visit Ilha Grande

Visiting Ilha Grande in early July proved to be a hidden gem in the Brazilian travel calendar. The low season means fewer tourists, allowing for an intimate experience of the island’s natural beauty without the overwhelming crowds. With the weather balancing warmth and humidity, it served as the ideal backdrop for exhilarating hikes and refreshing swims — perfect rewards after a day of exploring verdant trails.

How to get to Ilha Grande

Reaching Ilha Grande is a breeze, especially if you begin your journey in Angra dos Reis. With several daily buses departing from vibrant spots like Rio de Janeiro and Paraty, the trip is convenient and scenic. Upon arrival in Angra, the local ferry to Ilha Grande is not only the most economical choice but also a delightful experience as you glide across turquoise waters, surrounded by lush landscapes. Just remember to plan ahead, especially during high season; a queue can form quickly for the daily 3:30 PM weekday ferry or the earlier Saturday option at 1:30 PM.

Getting around Ilha Grande

Navigating Ilha Grande is an adventure in itself, as the island’s charm lies in its picturesque landscapes and serene isolation. While a few roads lace the terrain, the majority of the island remains untamed and is best explored on foot. Hiking trails reveal hidden beaches, stunning waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints that are untouched by motorized transport. With no public buses or cars to disrupt the tranquility, each step immerses you deeper into nature’s embrace.

Where to stay in Ilha Grande

Staying in Abraão offers the perfect launchpad for your Ilha Grande adventure. This vibrant village serves as the island’s main port, making it the ideal point for both your arrival and departure. With a variety of accommodations ranging from charming pousadas to cozy hostels, you’ll find something that suits every budget and taste. Beyond convenience, Abraão boasts an array of restaurants, shops, and nightlife, ensuring you are never far from the action.

What to do in Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande is a paradise for nature lovers, offering an extensive network of hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints and hidden gems. The hike to Pico do Papagaio, for instance, rewards adventurers with panoramic vistas of the island’s lush forests and sparkling coastline. Along the way, you can immerse yourself in the diverse flora and fauna, embracing the symphony of sounds that fills the air — an experience that starkly contrasts the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Hiking

Abraão to Lopes Mendes beach

The journey from Abraão to Lopes Mendes beach captivates with its stunning landscapes and vibrant flora. As you embark on this 7 km hike, the anticipation of the pristine shores ahead drives you forward, despite the initial challenge of conquering the first tall hill. Upon reaching its peak, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline — a perfect moment to pause and soak it all in.

The two subsequent hills are less daunting, allowing for moments of reflection as you meander through lush greenery and alongside hidden coves. Once you arrive at Lopes Mendes, the sheer vastness of this untouched paradise strikes a chord. Its beauty is undeniable, yet it’s the sense of solitude that truly defines the experience, making it feel like a secret only a few have discovered.

Abraão to Praia de Dois Rios

Hiking from Abraão to Praia de Dois Rios is an adventure that promises not only stunning views but also the thrill of exploration. While Google Maps and my trusty app, Mapy.cz, suggested shorter trails, we opted for the longer, more serene 9.5 km road. It’s a choice that allowed us to soak in the lush landscapes without the trepidation of steep, slippery shortcuts. Nature’s beauty unfolded before us, each step along the road a reminder of the island’s untouched charm.

Upon reaching Dois Rios, we were greeted by the confluence of two rivers merging into the sea, a mesmerizing sight that captures the essence of its name. However, our visit coincided with the aftermath of rain, meaning muddy waters surged into the ocean, transforming the beach scene into a swirling mix of earthy tones.

The once inviting sands were dotted with debris washed down from the hills, and the choppy waves echoed the chaos of Mother Nature’s unpredictable whims. Despite this, there was a raw beauty to be found in the wild turbulence, inviting reflection on the dynamic relationship between land and sea.

Pico do Papagaio

Pico do Papagaio, towering at one of the highest altitudes on the island, promises a breathtaking panorama that beckons adventurous souls. Yet, with a grueling ascent of 900 meters over just 5 kilometers, this trail demands a significant commitment. The humid climate can be quite relentless, turning what should be a focused endeavor into a sweaty struggle. Instead, we opted for two more manageable hikes, each with a gentle 350-meter ascent, which allowed us to enjoy the lush surroundings without the daunting fatigue.

Other hikes

The island is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be explored on foot, with trails that showcase its stunning natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. For instance, the trek to Feiticeira waterfall and beach offers a refreshing escape, where the sound of cascading water harmonizes with the gentle rustle of palm leaves. Here, you can plunge into crystalline pools or bask in the sun-kissed sands, a perfect reward after a moderate hike.

If you’re seeking a more ambitious adventure, consider the daunting challenge of the complete island loop. While tackling the entire route in a single day may not be feasible, breaking it up allows you to meander through charming villages like Abraão and Magalhães, each with its unique character and tranquil vibes.

Boat tours

If you’re not up for a hike but still crave the sun-kissed beauty of pristine beaches, boat tours offer the perfect escape. Imagine gliding over shimmering turquoise waters, the gentle sway of the boat matching the rhythm of your excitement as you approach hidden gems only accessible by sea. Among these, Lagoa Azul stands out as a dazzling highlight, inviting you to explore its hidden depths.

The Isla Grande Brazil

Isla Grande, or Ilha Grande as it’s lovingly known, offers a sublime escape for those seeking a blend of tranquility and adventure. With its lush greenery and untouched landscapes, the island feels like a sanctuary away from the frenetic pace of Rio de Janeiro. Visiting in early July not only ensured we sidestepped the summer crowds but also allowed us to embrace the serene beauty that envelops the island during low season. The weather, pleasantly mild, complemented leisurely hikes through dense forests leading to viewpoints that seemed to stretch into infinity.

Relax on the beach

However, don’t overlook the charm of Abraão’s smaller beaches like Praia do Galego and Praia Preta. While they offer a more intimate experience, they are equally as enchanting. Spend your day basking in the sun on Praia do Galego, then take a leisurely walk to Praia Preta, where a local stall serves up refreshing caipirinhas that perfectly complement the tropical setting. Sipping on this iconic drink while soaking in the view makes for an idyllic, unforgettable seaside escape. Each beach holds its own unique charm, inviting you to savor moments of serenity while surrounded by stunning natural beauty.

Party for Isla Brazil

Isla Grande Brazil, may not be the first place that comes to mind when envisioning vibrant nightlife, but it certainly holds its own when it comes to throwing unforgettable parties. Nestled amidst stunning natural beauty, you’ll find the lively atmosphere at Che Lagarto. Known for its welcoming vibe, this hostel and bar not only serves up delicious caipirinhas but also hosts regular events that keep the energy high, ensuring that travelers mingle and make memories. With a diverse crowd and infectious rhythms, every night feels like a celebration.
